Parallel Worlds is a project by artist Katy Beinart about the different 'worlds' that exist in the city of Oxford. It is a research project supported by an Art Plus Award for Art in Public Places, from the Arts Council England and SEEDA through which Katy has developed a series of art works which range from performance to permanent pieces in public spaces.
On this site you will find an archive of views of Oxford, taken in different areas of the city. The areas are colour-coded on the map on the home page and the links to the left take you to different areas.
The images came from a participatory photography project, in which local residents used disposable cameras to document views of places they felt were important. They then passed the kit on, so the camera went on a journey around the city. The images were also made into magic lantern slides, which were displayed at a magic lantern show at the Museum of the History of Science.
Through collecting these views, Katy developed View Point, a viewfinder device which contains a series of 3d views of the city, which is located at the Oxford Castle site. You can see images of the artwork and download the map on the news page.
The project is supported by Modern Art Oxford, Artpoint, Oxford Inspires, Oxford Preservation Trust, The Museum of the History of Science, City Sightseeing Oxford, Oxford Castle, and OVADA.
